Tinubu to Reduce Transport Fares Nationwide by 2026

President Bola Tinubu announced on Thursday that starting October 1, 2026, transport fares nationwide will be reduced through the use of compressed natural gas (CNG) and electric vehicles (EVs). This initiative, discussed with state governors under the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), aims to lower transportation costs by utilizing the reduced operating expenses associated with CNG and EVs.

The Federal Government is investing significantly in the energy transition, with over 120,000 vehicles converted to CNG and plans for more than 1,000 CNG refuelling stations across Nigeria. The government has allocated N100 billion for the acquisition of 3,000 CNG-powered buses for mass transit.

A joint committee between federal and state governments will be established to implement immediate measures for reducing transport costs. Tinubu emphasized the importance of passing savings from cheaper CNG to commuters, aiming for lower passenger fares.

The success of this plan will depend on the availability of CNG and EV vehicles, conversion facilities, refuelling stations, and adequate gas supply.
